How can I restore my carnitine levels?
If you are a dialysis patient you may be at risk of DCD. Fortunately, there is a medication that can help restore your body's carnitine levels. It is called Carnitor® Injection, and it is the only FDA approved treatment for DCD.
How is Carnitor® delivered?
Carnitor® Injection is given by a healthcare professional at the end of each dialysis session.
Is there a difference between Carnitor® Injection, and oral forms of carnitine?
Yes. Only Carnitor® Injection is approved by the FDA to replace the carnitine that has been removed during dialysis treatment. Oral forms of carnitine are not approved by the FDA for DCD. Oral forms of carnitine are not recommended in DCD because patients with renal failure cannot adequately process metabolites that form with oral use. (Discuss with your healthcare professional).
Safety
Adverse events reported with Carnitor® use include nausea, vomiting, body odor, gastritis and seizures. There are no reported contraindications or warnings. Only the intravenous form of Carnitor® is indicated for use in ESRD patients on hemodialysis. See Precautions in the Prescribing Information.
Discuss your concerns with your healthcare professional.
