What is carnitine?
Carnitine is a naturally occurring substance in your body that helps your body use energy.
What is DCD?
DCD is the abbreviation for Dialysis-Related Carnitine Deficiency. During dialysis, harmful wastes and excess fluids from the blood that the body does not need are removed. But, dialysis also removes good things from the blood that the body does need, like carnitine. When your carnitine levels fall below normal due to the removal of carnitine by dialysis, this condition is called DCD.
Eating a diet lacking in carnitine rich foods (meat and dairy products) and a reduced ability of the kidney to make carnitine can contribute to DCD. Please talk to your healthcare professional for additional information.
